ABOUT US: A conversation with Catherine

Catherine Sparks, Founder of Sparks Impact Group

Why did you start Sparks IMPACT Group?

Because I care deeply about making an impact—helping organizations move forward, solve meaningful problems, and create environments where people, teams, and systems can perform at their best.

I’ve always been drawn to work that sits at the intersection of strategy, operations, people, and performance. I’ve seen firsthand how much potential organizations unlock when there is clarity, alignment, accountability, and the right systems supporting the work.

I wanted to build something that allows me to continue doing that work in a meaningful, practical, and lasting way.

What is your background?

Over the course of my career, I've worked across North America in both public and private sector environments, leading large and complex portfolios that included strategy, operations, human resources, organizational design, service delivery, governance, and transformation work.

I've had the opportunity to be part of executive teams, lead large-scale organizational change, build new operating models, improve service delivery systems, and work across a wide range of industries and functions.

I've also served in board leadership and advisory roles, which has strengthened my perspective around governance, long-term planning, accountability, and decision-making.

What has always interested me most is how organizations actually function in practice—how strategy connects to operations, how leadership shapes culture, and how systems influence performance.

Why BRING IN AN EXTERNAL PERSPECTIVE?

Organizations often know what challenges they are facing, but can struggle to create the time, space, objectivity, or capacity needed to address them.

An external perspective can help leaders navigate complexity, facilitate difficult conversations, challenge assumptions, and create momentum around important priorities.

My role is not to replace internal expertise, but to complement it—bringing experience, structure, and support that helps organizations move forward with confidence.

What MAKES YOUR PERSPECTIVE DIFFERENT?

Throughout my career, I've rarely worked within a single function. Instead, I've led work that sits across strategy, operations, people, governance, service delivery, performance, and transformation.

That experience allows me to see organizations as interconnected systems and understand how decisions in one area impact performance in another.

I've also had the opportunity to work at multiple levels of organizations throughout my career—as an individual contributor, operational leader, executive, board member, and trusted advisor.

I've spent time in boardrooms discussing long-term strategy and governance, and I've spent time in the field with my steel-toes on working alongside frontline teams to understand how decisions, systems, and processes affect day-to-day operations. That perspective helps me bridge the gap between strategic intent and operational reality.

I bring both strategic perspective and practical implementation experience, helping organizations move from ideas and plans to meaningful action and results.

Rather than focusing on a single discipline, I work across strategy, systems, and execution—helping leaders create clarity around direction, alignment in how their organizations operate, and momentum around the priorities that matter most.

What is your approach when working with organizations?

My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded in execution.

The strongest outcomes happen when leaders and teams are part of the process—building clarity together, strengthening decision-making, and developing the internal capacity and confidence to carry the work forward long after the engagement ends.

I care deeply about helping organizations create clarity, strengthen alignment, and build the conditions needed for sustained performance and meaningful results.

That means not only solving immediate challenges, but also improving how teams work together and sustain momentum over time.

Why “Strategy, Systems and Solutions”?

Because all three matter.

In my experience, good strategy without the right systems rarely leads to lasting results. Strong systems without clear direction create frustration. And solutions only work when they are practical, sustainable, and grounded in the realities of the organization.

That connection between strategy, systems, and execution has been a consistent theme throughout my career and continues to shape how I approach this work.

But for me, the three “S’s” also matter for another reason.

Sparks Impact Group was inspired by my three daughters—Sloan, Sawyer, and Stevi— my other three “S’s.” My girls continue to motivate me to invest my energy into work that strengthens the organizations, communities, and economy they are growing up in.

Why “Group”?

While every engagement is personally led by me, Sparks Impact Group was intentionally built around collaboration.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside exceptional leaders and brilliant subject matter experts across strategy, operations, governance, finance, communications, human resources, safety, and organizational transformation.

Depending on the needs of the engagement, clients may also benefit from the experience and expertise of this broader network of trusted professionals who support our work where it adds value, depth and impact. We work as a group to enable the success of your group.
